Sergeant Boitano

Having served within the 56th Steel Legion as a Sergeant for over twenty years, Bellum Boitano has amassed an enviable combat record in may theatres of war.  For the men under his direct leadership, he is a charismatic man, eminently willing to put himself in harm’s way to save the life of a Guardsman without a second thought.

For other Guardsmen, of all regiments of the Steel Legion, Sergeant Boitano has become something of a living legend.  Ever since his heroic actions during the Bakkus Crusade, where Boitano saved the life of General Kurov during a major assault, stories of the Sergeant started to spread.  At first, rumours started to circulate of how he had refused promotion by General Kurov, preferring instead to live the life of a humble sergeant but, gradually, renown was heaped upon his name when Guardsmen started to relate ever more wild stories of how he had single handedly defeated an Eldar Wraithlord, or routed a Tyranid swarm.

Some of these stories were certainly true, for Boitano has consistently proved himself to be a most courageous warrior, but it soon became apparent that every deed in battle was being attributed to his name, whether the Sergeant was even present in the action or not.

General Kurov was quick to capitalise on the morale-boosting properties of Boitano’s name and did nothing to stop the spread of the ever more outrageous rumours.  Some told of Boitano meeting and fighting on worlds or against enemies that he could not have possibly even seen, due to limits of space or time.  Many Guardsmen began to speak Boitano’s name in awe, others boasted they could equal his exploits.  The result was a group of regiments that were eager to take to battle against Ghazghkull’s invading forces, under the name of Sergeant Boitano, who would lead the Steel Legions to victory, killing the Ork Warlord with his bare hands.

It is a rare night when Guardsmen of the Steel Legion gather together to relax and a story depicting Sergeant Boitano is not told.  Many verses, poems and even bawdy songs have been written by creative Guardsmen over the years, all recounting Boitano’s incredible skill in battle.  The following has become a favourite amongst the Guardsmen of the 79th Steel Legion ever since the Third War for Armageddon started;

What would Bellum Boitano do?

What would Bellum Boitano do
If he was here right now?
He’d make a plan and he’d follow through
That’s what Bellum Boitano would do.

When Bellum Boitano was on Valhalla
Fighting in the cold
He killed two Farseers and three Exarchs
While wearing a blindfold.

And when Bellum Boitano was in the jungle
Fighting huge Cudbears
He used his master-crafted flamer
And saved a million tithe-payers.

What would Bellum Boitano do
If he was here today?
I’m sure he’d kick an Ork or two
That’s what Bellum Boitano would do.

I want Kurov to notice me
He knows that I will never flee.
And I will just go on
Fighting everyone.
So maybe I’ll become a Guardsmen too
Coz that’s what Bellum Boitano would do.

What would Bellum Boitano do?
He’d call the men in the Hive
And tell to unite for true
That’s what Bellum Boitano would do.

When Bellum Boitano travelled through space
To the planet of the C’Tan
He fought the evil Necron Lord
And saved us all again.

And when Bellum Boitano built a bastion
He beat up Jaghatai Khan
Because Bellum Boitano
Doesn’t take shit from anybody.

So let’s pull together
We’ve got to stop Ghazghkull
And we’ll save Armageddon too
Coz that’s what Bellum Boitano would do.
And we’ll save Armageddon too
Coz that’s what Bellum Boitano would do!
