While the Thousand Sons have been coming on quite nicely as a force, I had been putting something off – the Imperial Army ‘Spireguard’ who supported them on Prospero. This was a particular problem as the early clashes against the Space Wolves featured the Spireguard not the Thousand Sons themselves, so the campaign simply cannot get started without a decent force of these chaps!

The issue, however, was that I did not want these guys to be ‘standard’ Imperial Guard, using your standard Cadian miniatures. As Spireguard, they had to be a bit… special.

I had first thought about using Solar Auxilia models and, in fact, the Spireguard do have a regiment equipped as such. However, I wanted something more basic for the bulk of the rank and file. Basic… but special…

In the end, I picked up some Pith Helmet heads and Cuirass torsos from Anvil Industry, on the recommendation of some folks on DakkaDakka. I picked up an even split between male and female heads & bodies, but the females do look somewhat odd on the male Cadian legs. Might have to cut back on those (would like to use as many Cadian bits as possible without losing the more unique look of the Spireguard…). That said, a simple head and body swap would be all that was needed in terms of modelling, and the rest could be done with painting – a dark red for the tunic (cannot let them be as bright as the Thousand Sons, as they are still ‘only’ Imperial Army), cream-coloured trousers, and their signature bright silver carried by helmets and cuirass.

The result, I think, was worth the (tiny) effort made to make them different from run of the mill Imperial Army.

The downside is that I have just had a look at the army list and a 20-strong infantry unit like this costs just 70-odd points with a Lascarbine upgrade and some new toys. So, three units to a platoon, three platoons to a company… add some command and Medicae, and you are looking at less than 1,000 points for a company of about 200 people.

That is… a lot of painting for really not many points. Might have to give this some thought…

However, with these guys done, it is time to move back to a few other bits and pieces before the Horus Heresy legions descend upon us in about three weeks! On the painting table right now I have some Ultramar Auxilia artillery pieces, and I have a hankering to do a new knight for House Slughorn…
